Classic hummus is a Mediterranean and middle eastern dip and spread that is made from garbanzo beans (chickpeas), either cooked or canned. This go-to creamy hummus recipe is bright and flavorful that uses simple ingredients you probably already have on hand like tahini, lemon, garlic, olive oil and spices.
Hummus is a good source of fiber and plant based protein that can be eaten with veggies, pita, or used as a spread for gyro, wraps and sandwiches. Homemade hummus is fresh, healthier than store bought because it does not include added seed oils or fillers, preservatives like some store bought versions. With just 5 minutes to spare and a food processor/blender, you will have the BEST homemade hummus.
Healthy Homemade Hummus Ingredients
- Garbanzo Beans (chickpeas): Canned chickpeas is my go to preference because it is easy, quick and I don’t have to spend time boiling chickpeas. There’s no need to remove the skin, it will all be blended smooth.
- Tahini: Creamy, velvety tahini gives this recipe a nutty flavor.
- Olive oil: Good quality olive oil helps to emulsify the hummus and elevates the dip.
- Garlic: Fresh garlic. Start with 1 clove and adjust based on your taste preference. You can also roast garlic for a sweet, subtle flavor.
- Lemon: Tart lemon helps to give a fresh taste to this creamy hummus.
- Paprika: This smoky spice helps to balance and bring all the flavors together.
- Ice cold Water: For a super creamy hummus!
- Salt
How to Make Hummus (quick & easy)
The blender will do almost all the work for you. You can use a blender or a food processor, both are great. If you do have a high speed powered blender like a vitamix, I find that it produces even smoother, velvety hummus faster. If you are using a food processor, blend for at least 5 minutes or longer to get an extra smooth consistency. No need to remove the skins of the chickpeas, the blender will cream everything together perfectly.
- Rinse and strain canned garbanzo beans in a colander or strainer.
- Using a blender or food processor, add strained/rinsed garbanzo beans, peeled garlic, tahini, olive oil, lemon juice from 1/2 squeezed lemon, paprika and salt.
- Blend the hummus for 30 seconds.
- Pour in ice cold water. Start with 1/3 cup and blend for up to a minute. If you like the consistency, stop here. If you desire a thinner consistency to the hummus, add remaining ice water.
- Taste and add more salt, seasoning if needed.
OPTIONAL: Garnish when serving for an extra pop of color, flavor and texture. Some garnishing recommendations include parsley, sumac seasoning, olive oil, whole garbanzo beans etc.
The Secret to Smooth and Creamy Homemade Hummus
Drum roll!!! Ice water. Yup, Ice cold water is the secret ingredient that creams the hummus into a smooth consistency. The ice cold water add more air and a lighter silky texture. Some recipes call for ice cubes, but I recommend ice cold water because you have better control with how thin the hummus becomes. Too much ice or water, will produce a watered down hummus.
Tips & Tricks
Storing hummus is super easy and perfect for meal prep as a dip or spread.
Refrigerate: Up to 5 days in an air tight container
Freeze: Up to 3 months.
Keep in mind that the freezing process can add more moisture into the hummus, making it slightly thinner in consistency.
